Vedas.
By
Madhu Varshney.
The Vedas are the oldest
scriptures in the world library. The Vedas are the most scared books of the
Aryans. They are four in number: Rig. Veda, Yajur Veda, Sam Veda and Atharva
Veda. Before the beginning of time the four Rishis were enlightened and the
Vedas were first revealed (realized) by the four Rishis-Agni, Aditya, Yagu and
Angitus.
The
word “Veda” means knowledge. The Vedas are the scriptures of all true knowledge
which is classified in two categories-Para Vidya (Knowledge of the worldly
matters) We have in the Veda knowledge of God, Self, Nature, Cosmic order as
also knowledge about social norms, ethnical conduct, marriage, food, health,
objects of the world etc.
“The
Vedas are the most remarkable work which contain not only religious ideas for a
perfect life, but also facts which all science has since proved true electric
radium, electrons, airships all seem to be known to the seers whom found the
Vedas”.
In
modern times, Maharishi Swami Dayanand Sarswati, the founder of Arya Samaj has
propagated the teaching of the Vedas and he believed that the Vedas were for
all human beings.
The
fundamental message from the Vedas is to do utmost good and to promote welfare
of the world as a whole. In other words, Vedas teach us to promote physical,
spiritual and social development of entire mankind without any distention of
caste, colours, creed, religious race or sex.
The
Vedas promote universal brotherhood and do not allow tolerating terrorism of
any kind whatsoever, Vedas do no allow killing of any live entity.
According
to the Vedas, immortal soul resides in physical body. The souls of human beings
animals, birds and plants are alike. After death soul takes birth in the form
of another body according to it deeds, called karmas of the past lives.
According
to the Vedas, mind is different from spirit or soul. While soul is a conscious
element, mind is physical element. It appears to be conscious but that consciousness
it drives from soul as does moon its luminosity from the sun. Soul, however,
acts through the agency of mind.
In
Vedas Deva or Devata means who always do good for others and give and give and
never expect any ting in return. Thus is Agni is Devata as it shines and
provides us heat and energy. Similarly, Surya (sun) is devta, Indra (energy) is
devta, and Vayu (air) is devata. Varun (water) is devta. Som is the presiding
Deity (subject matter) of many Vedic Mantras. Som is that which gives pleasure,
peace, energy and bliss.
In the Vedas, apart from the
spiritual matters, there are mantras covering psychological, moral and social
matters. On the institution of marriage a Mantra states “Our two hearts have
mingled with each other like water of two rivers which cannot be separated”
The Vedas abound in references to
medical science, astronomy, chemistry, physics. Shipbuilding which have
astounded the scientific community.
The
call of the Vedas is “Listen, O people of the world you are the sons of God”
They are not to preach any particular religion but spiritual outlook in life.
They call upon us “Manurbhav” Be human, conduct your self as a human being, not
like an animal.
The
Vedas teach us that man is essentially divine realizing that divinity in us is
the purpose of life again the novelty and uniqueness of the Vedas is that Veda
gives more importance to the collectivity, the society and assembly of the
people than for any individual. Vedic values teach us to judge people by their
action, not the caste the are born in. Vedas however, promote universal
education.

Let us all go back to
Vedas and spread the knowledge of the Veda to one and all on the earth to make
this world noble.
Krinvanto Visham Aryam “ Make this world
noble.”
“The Vedas contain
all the knowledge.
Bless me with this
knowledge just as you have blessed the deities.
O pioneer Deities!
Knowing the path of truth, tread on it.
Only by acquiring
knowledge from Vedas can one
know the path of truth and righteousness.
Vedas means knowledge
and the Vedas are really an ocean of knowledge”
-Yajur Veda,
