Vedic  Prayer

For  Bliss & Prosperity

By Prof. Surendra Nath Bhardwaj London U.K.

ASAMBADHAM BADHYATO MANAVANAM, YASYA UDVATAH  PRAVATAH SAMAM BAHU. NANA VIRYA OSHADHI RYA BIBHARTI, PRITHIVI NAH PRATHATAM RADHYATAM NAH.

Atharv-Veda 12.1.2

Whose are the high, low (and) even places. Who bears the herbs of many potencies-may that earth strengthening the unity of mankind be spread out for us, (and) be prosperous for us.

Explanation:

We get everything from the earth, It protects and brings us up like a mother. That is why we call it the mother earth. High mountains grow on it and it has low places and fields spread far away. Medicinal herbs of many potencies, vegetation, lovely flowers and fruit laden trees have grown on it. All creatures have life because of all these. We get food, water, wood and metals of all kinds, diamonds and gems from the earth; but we who are the children of this mother keep on fighting amongst us. Jealousy, malice, greed and pride in us have turned this earth, which is more attractive than paradise, into a veritable hell. Peaces of families have been disappearing. Love, mutual respect and co-operation have been taken over by wanton selfishness. The human race is torn apart into countless warring fractions. All this has been done in the name of religion and God. High-sounding words of truth, justice, mercy and well being of others have been kept imprisoned in sacred books and Satsangs only. To escape from poverty, mental tension, fear and worries is possible only if the inhabitants of the earth can live with love and good  will. This vast earth will make us prosperous if we replace narrow vision with broadmindedness.

FOUNTAIN OF INNER JOY

By: Dr. T.R.Khanna

WAYS TO OVERCOME THE REACTIVE MIND

Take charge of our Attitude

What does a positive attitude do for us? When we are positive, we can put others at ease and bring out their best qualities. We can create solutions instead of succumbing to the conflict that follows reactions. Whenever we discover that we are reacting, we should make mid-course corrections, and tune back into our inner peace and depth. We are the producer and director of our attitude, so it is our responsibility to make it the best.

Set Realistic Goals and Expectations

Sometimes we set unreasonable goals for ourselves, or we think other people have expectations of us. Then we frustrate ourselves trying to fulfill those expectations. As a result of that frustration we can easily trigger the mind to react. We can overcome this reactive state by being more realistic in our expectations, and by letting go of those expectations where necessary. We should ourselves daily, “What kind of unreasonable demands am I creating that are making me react to situations and people?” Then we can create priorities that reflect more realistic expectations for ourselves and others,

Slow Down Inside

When we worry about how to accomplish our “to do” lists, we build a mental pressure cooker inside our mind and fuel it with more and more tension. It does not take long for our hyper ness and tension to spill over into mental reactions.

To overcome reactive mental states, we need to learn to slow down the racing mind. To accomplish this, we can slow down our breathing, making each inhalation and exhalation deep and full. We can also put a break on the racing mind by practicing hatha yoga pose with full concentration.

The Red Eye

Usually people go to the doctor’s office with complaints of red eye, also commonly called pink eye.  Mostly it is the vascular congestion of the Conjunctiva, which is called red eye.  It is most important to understand that red eye can be due to simple, straightforward conditions which can easily be treated.  However, other conditions that cause red eye require immediate attention as they can threaten your vision.

Here are some common eye conditions with brief presenting symptoms and treatments.

  1. Stye

This presents as a small, painful red nodule of the eye lids with some conjunctival congestion.  Treat with warm compresses, pain medications and it usually resolves by itself.  If persistent, you may need antibiotics and on rare occasion incision and drainage.

  1. Blepharitis

This is inflammation of the eye lids.  Symptoms include redness of eyelid margins, some swelling, and a gritty burning sensation in the eyes.  Keep eye hygiene and you may need local antibiotic drops.

  1. Bacterial Conjunctivitis

This is the most common form of red eye and it presents marked conjunctival congestion, purulent discharge, and sticky eye lids.  Bacterial conjunctivitis can involve one or both and usually vision is normal with no pain.  You will need single antibiotic eye drops prescribed only by your physician.  Remember it can be contagious so be sure to keep up personal hygiene measures.

  1. Allergic Conjunctivitis

This form of conjunctivitis can be seasonal, and also be part of a general atopic allergic syndrome.  Symptoms include conjunctival congestion, itchy eyes, and swelling of the eyelids.  Allergic conjunctivitis usually affects both eyes.

  1. Viral Conjunctivitis

Red eye is commonly caused by a virus, where symptoms include conjunctival congestion, water discharge, and eye irritation.  There is no need for antibiotics but since this can be contagious, treatment is usually proper eye hygiene and washing of hands, etc.

  1. Subconjunctival Hemorrhage

This usually occurs due to a rupture of the conjunctival blood vessel.  Sometimes this can happen as a result of sneezing, coughing, or rubbing of the eyes.  The hemorrhage appears dramatic, but there is usually no eye pain and no vision loss.  The hemorrhage is also self limited and should clear within 1-2 weeks.

  1. Orbital Cellulitis, Keratitis, Anterior Uveitis, Glaucoma
    1. These are much more serious eye conditions and they present red eye, swelling, tenders, and vision loss.  They require immediate medical attention so you must see your physician right away.

In summary, whenever you have red eye with pain, welling, profuse discharge, or loss of vision, see you physician right away.  Never use eye drops or any other medications for your eyes unless they are   prescribed by your physician.  Do not use antibiotic drops, corticosteroid drops, or anesthetic drops without the written consent of your doctor.  Never share glasses or contact lenses with other people.  Always maintain proper eye hygiene. Cheers and Good Health!

Pandit Gurudatt Vidyarthi and Swami Dayanand

Light is attracted to light

By Pt. Birbal Singh Orlando FL

The fortunate saw the light

Those that are blessed reached nearer

Asit spreads in rapid waves, darkness runs further

Consumed in the spirit of its concurring power

The shining light will shine ever after forever.

Youthful Gurudatt glittered like a midnight star

Brilliant and enterprising he skipped classes

In quick succession as the sunshine chases the dawn in a moon lit morning

And brings satisfaction to the day’s work and cozy evening.

No power can change the orderly sequence of times nature

The seeds must germinate and grow to full stature

And manifests its inborn sterling quality

Like flashes of lightening striking rain clouds on parched dry pasture.

The growing scientist headed of Swami Dayanand reformer

Gurudatt attended public discourses of Dayanand the fiery orator

Many visits followed, Gurudatt raised intricate questions, debating challenging.

Swami Ji gave appropriate. Relevant, authoritative answers to the joy and delight of aspiring Gurudatt

The advanced scholar declared

Swami Ji You have closed my mouth and point the way to the Vedic charter.

News spreads the subcontinent, the Swami Ji is gravely ill

Three months passed, all medical treatments failed

Sabotage suspected, the ground bottle poison given to him in his milk now fatal

He was taken to Mount Abu in condition gravely critical.

Young Gurudatt was chosen to lead the team from Punjab

To tend the Swami Ji battling for a miracle survival

Thousand of people from all over gathered to witness the pathetic, transition of the majority’s departure.

As the time drew nearer, Swami Ji had his last shave and bath

Sat in his Yoga asana asked all to chant with him the Geriatric Mantra

Then requested all to leave the hall He made one striking glance to Gurudatt took three successive breaths Shuffled off the mortal coil, smiled

His last words, what a great turn

Teri Ichha Pooran Ho Thine will be done.

With these Godly utterances

The greatest diya that shone in Kali Yug Bharat

In the Amavas evening, when all Bharat light up their homes, streets, cities

To welcome back home exiled Lord Ram

The most brilliant diya ascends the heavens to live in angelic garden

Of his benevolent savior God the Brahmatman.

Other groups in far off districts Began to fall in line in close competitive pursuits

Swami Dayanand had laid the foundation for a new prosperous India

A new horizon dawned in the field of education

The renaissance of knowledge penetrated every nook and corner

Gurukuls, Colleges, Orphanages,

home for destitute dotted the landscape of a new vigorous India.

Shakti has returned to Bharat, power imminent

The religious, social cultural, educational projects.

All moved at surprisingly successive speed

Separate schools for the boys and girls, knowledge is the topmost creed

The inspired Gurudatt Vidyarthi threw his soul, mind and body in the field of education.

The erudite scholar began translating Vedic scriptures from Sanskrit to English

His work gave satisfaction to educationists opening new channels

To broader visions and enlightenment to deeper thoughts of Vedic verses.

His translations of Ish Upanishad won credentials at the world Parliament of Religion at Chicago

His chosen English carried the power of lasting intellectual impressions

Bringing scholars from East to West in closer scriptural relation.

His magnum opus, Wisdom of Rishis, Brings to surface scriptural authority of a living God

Terminology of the Vedas cemented the fact and belief of the absolute reality

Life of the spirit bridged the gap between science and divinity.

The authorship of books is proofs of his brilliant erudite scholarship

People from distance places sat at his feet for spiritual inspiration and answers to age-long puzzling Vedic mantras

Bridge to light the secrets and art of scientific exploration.

Point of View:

The power of pranayam

By: Madanmohan,

Department of Physiology, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and

Research, Pondicherry 605006, India. E-mail: drmadanmohan123@gmail.com

Received 14 January 2008; accepted 15 January 2008; published 16 January 2008 Indian classical traditions including yoga emphasize the existence of pran, the infinite and omnipresent cosmic energy. This whole creation, Mother Nature is bountiful. So is pran. At the physical level, pran manifests as light and other forms of physical energy. In our body, pran is the vital force that energizes us. The science of pranayam (a yogic breathing technique) deals with the knowledge, control and enrichment of this vital force. The classical Upanishads which were written over 5000 years ago give us guidelines about pranayam. Prashn Upanishad (2:13) describes pran as the universal governing force that protects and enhances us like our mother.

The Bhagavad Gita describes pran and pranayam in a number of verses. Patanjali’s Rajayog and many tantrik texts describe a number of graded practices including pranayams that help us understand and harness this infinite reservoir of energy. The popular complementary healing systems pranic healing and reiki are based on the concept of pranic energy  Indian yogis and ayurvedic physicians have used the power of pranayam for healing since time immemorial. The mind and body are intricately interrelated. Besides wasting energy, irregular breathing is associated with a restless mind.

In contrast, slow, deep and uniform pranayam breathing produces psychosomatic relaxation especially when it is associated with meditative awareness. During pranayam, one can follow the breath as it flows in and out. One can also visualize cosmic pran flowing into the body and mind with each inspiration enlightening the whole being. According to yogic texts, the practice of pranayam results in inner peace and joy, broadening of vision and development of positive emotions like unselfish love. Pranayam is described as a means to achieving divinity and perfection. According to Patanjali (Yoga Darshan, 2: 52–53) pranayam unfolds the inner light and improves the power of concentration.

We have previously reported [1] that savitri pranayam (slow, rhythmic and deep breathing with a ratio of 2:1:2:1 between inspiration, breath held in inspiration, expiration and breath held in expiration) produces a significant reduction in oxygen consumption and deep psychosomatic relaxation within 5 minutes. Telles and Desiraju [2] have demonstrated that a variant of pranayam breathing is associated with a 19% reduction in oxygen consumption. In a study on healthy children who underwent pranayam training for 3 Medical Physiology Online Exploring the logic of life Medical Physiology Online (MPO)

Madanmohan. The power of pranayam. Medical Physiology Online [serial online] article 1; volume 1: 2008. Available from http://www.medicalphysiologyonline.org 2 months, Udupa et al [3] have inferred modulation of ventricular performance as indicated by systolic time intervals. In an 18-year old female with frequent premature ventricular complexes (PVC), Prakash et al [4] found that deep breathing at 6 breaths per minute abolished PVC; a significant reduction in the frequency of PVC during deep breathing at 6 breaths per minute has been reported in at least a subset of patients with unifocal PVC. The beneficial effect of deep breathing was suggested to be due to increased vagal modulation of sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes. Ravindra et al [5] have shown that pranayam and

relaxation training for 2 months reduced the frequency of palpitations in two patients with frequent PVC.

Given this evidence, I believe it is important to continue to investigate the physiologic effects of pranayam using scientifically valid methods and apply encouraging results to determine their effects on human health. The power of pranayam is there for all of us to harness. That is my opinion. Conflict of interests: none

Pure and fragrant substances are needed for every Yajna. Pure butter and dry twigs are needed for every Yajna. Damp pieces of wood do not burn in sacred fire. Oblations offered on damp and slowly burning twigs increase smoke and cause pain. Oblations of fragrant substances and butter are offered best and well-hewed, well-purified and well-dried wood. Such a yajna fills the water, the herb and everything else the spiritual fragrance. Flaming twigs alone carry the brilliance of the sacred fire up to nature gods. God Fire! We too wish to make our life yajna like

We have made our sense-twigs chaste and brilliant. We have made our thoughts-substances pure, pious and non-violent. We have boiled and cleansed our butter of love to make it lustless and all embracing. Dear Divine Fire! No yajna in which Thou art not immanent can bring divine fruits. Dear Divine Fire! Surrender to God to be blissful

Who ever comes to God’s shelter achieve joy and bliss. This adage is wholly true for thyself and thyself alone. You are always happy after you surrender to God. God is Omniscient, Sublime, Omnipresent and Almighty. Those who comes under Thy protection, will be wholly happy. Those who comes under Thy law, will be wholly happy. When one person comes under the shelter of another, that person protects the refugee to his utmost power. Hence if you surrender yourself to God then He is going to bless you. The relatives provides relative happiness which is limited. The relatives such as mother, father, teacher, brother, wife, son, husband and friend provides relative happiness which is limited. God provides absolute happiness. Pervasive blessing and real happiness are obtained only from Thy universally resplendent hands. Mostly we little knowing souls do not understand wherein lie our well-being. Image of light! Today we dedicate ourselves whole-heartedly to Thee. Now we offer our life boats to Thee. Our life struggle will be under Thy protection. Hence there will be victory in the life battles fought under Thy command.Essence of life! We bow to Thee Please protect and liberate us. Lead us from sin and sorrow to happiness and bliss

UNITED ARYA SAMAJ MANDIRS

On the occasion of 133rd Anniversary of Arya Samaj

April 10th -13th,

On April 10, 2008, Arya Samajists all over the world congregated to observe the 133rd Anniversary of Arya Samaj. Here, in the tristate area (NY, NJ and Connecticut), we honored this event by having families ignite their individual Havan Kundas at the Arya Spiritual Center grounds located in Richmond Hill, Queens NY.

We had at least 136 families performing individual Havan with one voice chanting Vedic Mantras. There were over 700 of us present represented by over 10 Arya Samaj Mandirs. Also there were tables with Vedic books, Literature and CDs for sale. We hope you picked up this year's magazine.

Many thanks to Bhai Balram and Bhai Ramesh for getting the magazines published for this occasion within such a short time. We also thank all the sponsors and the members who contributed cash towards the cost of this event.

Among those who attended were distinguished representatives from the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha North America Vanprasthi ( Pt. Girish Khosla from Michigan), Dr. Rajinder and Jyoti Gandhi, (Patron Arya Pratinidhi Sabha)  and Dr. Ramesh Gupta and his entire family from NJ, Brahmachari Vishwajit, Professor Ved Shravah, Bhai Subash Arora( Arya Samaj New York).

Reverend Pandits and Panditas. All of you who came out with your families are most important. Together we raised the OM Jhanda, chanted Vedic Mantras, sang Vedic Bhajans, recognized Arya Samaj stalwarts, listened to eloquent speakers and concluded with Shanti Path.

Each year we recognize prominent Arya Samaj leaders and the following recipients were given plaques: Pandit Hardeo Gopie, Pandit Budhram Anmole, Pandit Shastri Bisoondial, Pandit Hari Prasad Tripati, Vanprasthi Arya Pathik Pandit Girish Khosla and Bahen Renuka Jurakhan.

This year, we were honored to have Dharmacharya Pandit Ramlall and Dr. Satish Prakash, renowned Arya Samaj Missionary, on the same platform. Together, they nurtured the congregation with their words of wisdom. We hope this legacy and goodwill will continue in the future.

On this day, the 133rd anniversary of the Arya Samaj, we must honor the women of our community who have helped to spread the message that Swami Dayanand fought so hard for, the empowerment of women.

Let us applaud the efforts of such female Panditas: Pandita Bharati Ramsamooj, Pandita Indrani Rampersad, Pandita Indroutie Singh, Pandita Gayatri Chattergoon, Pandita Savitri Singh, Pandita Mahadai Etwaru, Pandita Jas Rajaram from the Arya Samaj USA, Pandita Amrita from the Gurukhul, and other distinguished Panditas,

This list is too long to name all. These women and so many other women in our Samaj have helped to spread the message of Arya Samaj to our community and have proven that there is nothing a woman cannot do. Let us all unite together to continue the propagation of female Panditas and female leaders in our Samajs.

In the presidential address Shri Vishav Bandhu thanked every one for the help & co-operation provided by every organization to make this grand success.

We have many plans for the future to assist the less fortunate and hope we continue our mission with friendship and unity.

The next big Arya Samaj event will be the Annual Maha Sammelan that will take place in Ford, NJ July 31st through August 3rd. All of the information for this event can be found at www.aryasamaj.com. Please encourage all of your mandirs members especially your youths to heavily attend this event.
